New Berkeley supervisor sworn-in as investigation on misused funds

BERKELEY COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Berkeley County’s new supervisor was sworn-in on Wednesday night several weeks after accusations that the former supervisor misappropriated funds.

Johnny Cribb, the new supervisor, comes from the City of Hanahan where he was the town administrator for the past nine years.

“Fiscal responsibility is the key to everything,” Cribb said. “Some people spend their money one way and they spend the public’s money a totally different way. And what we have to do is spend the public’s money every bit as fiscally responsible as we would spend our money at home.”

Berkeley County Council accused former supervisor Bill Peagler of cutting an almost $50,000 check to Deputy Supervisor Tim Callanan without approval.

Peagler is also accused of putting the county’s former public information officer on administrative leave because she did not send a press release he requested.

Council members said Wednesday night that they have confidence that Cribb will have different spending habits than the former supervisor.

“We’re not worried about his spending habits,” Berkeley County Council Member Tommy Newell said. “He’s not that kind of person.”

Council voted unanimously to authorize SLED to investigate the possible misappropriation of funds. Council also voted to freeze Peagler’s spending power.

Sen. Tim Scott conducted the swearing-in ceremony.
