CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Charleston has passed a ban on plastic bags.
On Tuesday night, city council passed the second and third reading of the ordinance which bans plastic bags at the checkout line. Styrofoam is prohibited too.
Enforcement on the ban will not start until January of 2020.
At that time, businesses, including grocery stores and restaurants, won’t be allowed to give customers those plastic bags at the register.
Any utensils that a restaurant gives you for take-out must also be recyclable or compostable.
Charleston joins Folly Beach, Isle of Palms, Mount Pleasant and Sullivan’s Island in banning plastic bags.
