Adult novelty store has county leaders pushing for tighter regulation

DORCHESTER COUNTY, SC (WCSC) -

Adult stores could see tighter regulation in Dorchester County if an ordinance gets preliminary approval Tuesday night.

The Dorchester County Council Planning, Development, and Building Committee will have a public hearing and give a recommendation on an ordinance dealing with adult novelty stores.

The ordinance would amend the term Adult Book Stores to Adult Novelty Stores. According to the agenda, this would broaden the definition of adult stores to include novelty items and devices.

Dorchester County Councilman David Chinnis said this ordinance would clarify things and keep adult stores where they are intended to be.

Chinnis said the ordinance would aim to control the location of future adult stores and limit where adult novelty items can be sold.

Chinnis said the push for this ordinance started when a new adult store set up shop in a residential neighborhood.

The Badd Kitty adult store opened a few months ago in Summerville.

Jill Bush is the Regional Manager for Badd Kitty and said they had a hard time finding a Summerville location and received a lot of pushback prior to opening.

Bush said the store is there to help couples, and there is a market for an adult store in Summerville.

Bush said she also was not aware of Tuesday's hearing relating to adult stores.

Once the committee gives its recommendation it will then go to county council for second and third approval.
