James Island man threatens churchgoers, later arrested with machete

A James Island man has been arrested after threatening to kill churchgoers on Sunday, according to sheriff's office spokesman Roger Antonio.

At approximately 9:00 a.m., Lester Frederick Simmons, 51, entered the St. James United Methodist Church and threatened to kill attendees for reasons unknown, Antonio said.

Simmons left the church at the request of churchgoers, Antonio said.

Simmons was arrested at a gas station at Main Road and Bohicket Road minutes after leaving the church. Simmons had a machete in his possession during the time of his arrest, Antonio said.

No one was hurt during the incident.
