Wando Bridge repairs could take another 18 months

DORCHESTER COUNTY, SC (WCSC) -

South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) officials said it could be another 18 months before the work on the Wando Bridge is completely done.

The update was given by Deputy Secretary of Engineering, Leland Colvin, at an SCDOT Commission meeting on Thursday afternoon in Dorchester County.

Colvin said right now crews are working to get the bad cable out.

"That will complete the repairs and we will end up at that time with ten cables," Colvin said. "And when the bridge was brand new we only had eight so we will have built in that redundancy."

By Friday, crews should be done installing the monitoring cameras and microphones inside the bridge on the westbound and eastbound sides.

Once those are fully functional, Colvin said they will stop doing daily walkthroughs in the bridge.

"In addition, we've identified the next round of redundancies we are moving forward with," Colvin added. "We are starting the design with those redundancies and expect the redundancy and all repairs completed in about 18 months."
