Dorchester County Councilman Willie Davis passes away

DORCHESTER COUNTY, SC (WCSC) -

Dorchester County Councilman Willie Davis passed away on Thursday. 

Officials with Dorchester County government released a statement saying that Davis, 68, died of natural causes.

The county released the following information on his passing: 

It is with heavy hearts that Dorchester County announces the passing of Dorchester County Councilman, Willie Davis.

Davis, 68, died of natural causes, on Thursday, July 26, 2018, with his wife, Joyce, and children by his side.

Davis was a gentleman who graciously and passionately served the citizens of Dorchester County since 1991. During his tenure on Dorchester County Council he served as Vice-Chairman (2002 -2004 and 2007-2010) and served on the Lake Marion Regional Water Agency, Dorchester Seniors Inc., the St. George NAACP, the Berkeley Charleston Dorchester Rural Transportation Management Association and the Rosenwald School Board of Directors.

Congressman Jim Clyburn said “I was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of my good friend Councilman Willie Davis. Councilman Davis served the citizens of Dorchester County with honor and distinction for twenty-seven years.  I would like to extend my condolences to the family of Councilman Davis and the citizens of Dorchester County.” 

Dorchester County Council Chairman, Jay Byars echoed Congressman Clyburn's remarks adding, “There are some people in life that you wish you had known longer or that you could talk to just one more time. Willie Davis was just such a man. A natural teacher by calling, His smile and his wit were contagious. His quiet demeanor was calming, and his passion to serve and love his God, his family, and his community are legendary.” Byars added “Willie made a difference: in his family, with our council, and in this world. We love you and Joyce, and we will miss your leadership, your heart, and your passion. You fought the good fight. You ran a good race, and you kept the faith. And God has welcomed you home.”

Dorchester County Council Vice-Chairman, George Bailey added, “I have known Willie Davis for over fifty years. He was a very dear friend and one of the first people I met when I moved to St. George. He looked out for all his constituents and will be very hard to replace. I will miss my friend dearly.”

Jason Ward, County Administrator said “It has been an honor and a privilege to serve the people of Dorchester County alongside Councilman Willie Richard Davis. He was a gentleman, a servant leader, and a caring person who brought people together. He loved his family and he loved this community. He was so proud to be from Dorchester County and he worked tirelessly to make this community a better place.”

“I am saddened to hear of Mr. Davis’ passing.  I first had the honor of serving with Willie in 1995 and considered him to be a friend as well as a colleague.  He was a great constituent servant and an integral member of Council since he arrived in 1991.  Anyone who had the pleasure of working with Willie knew him as a great man with a wonderful sense of humor who loved God, his family, his church and, our county.  He will truly be missed.” – Bill Hearn, Dorchester County Council District 6.
