Charleston cancer survivors win gold on international waters

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

Nearly 50 members of Dragon Boat Charleston traveled across seas to compete in a race to beat cancer.

The Charleston-based team won gold in the all-cancer survivor women's division 200 meter race, and silver in the 500 meter race.

All members of the team are breast cancer survivors, and some are still undergoing treatment.

"Fighting cancer is tough business and surviving it every day takes courage," said Amy Brennan, executive director of Dragon Boat Charleston.

This year's race began in Florance, Italy, and finished up in Szeged, Hungary - where they were given their awards.

Every four years, the International Breast Cancer Paddler's Commission hosts the Dragon Boat Festival.

138 teams participated in this year's invitational, representing every continent.

Dragon boat paddling was adopted twenty years ago by Canadian sports medicine physician Doctor Don McKenzie as a rehabilitation for men and women worldwide.
