New volunteer group picks up trash on Isle of Palms, gets rewards

ISLE OF PALMS, SC (WCSC) -

A new group of volunteers called the Isle of Palms Cleanup Crew will come together for the first time to clean up Front Beach and they want your help.

The group asks volunteers to spend at least 30 minutes picking up trash between 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 on Mondays from now through Labor Day.

Monday is their first time in action. There's a total of 11 scheduled beach sweeps.

They'll be picking up trash on Front Beach from 9th Avenue to the pier.

Volunteers are welcome to gather at a designated local restaurant and enjoy IOP Cleanup Crew specials.

Organizers hope that Isle of Palms residents will join in but the anyone is welcome to participate. 

Children who are 14 and younger must be supervised by an adult. 

People who sign in and clean up at least three weeks during the summer will get an IOP Cleanup Crew T-shirt.

If you'd like to sign up, the list will be on the beach near the walkover that leads to the public restrooms next to Coconut Joe's.

People with signup sheets will be wearing bright green shirts.

Organizers will provide bags and gloves and there will be reusable burlap bags available from the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources.

According to a news release, the first three sweeps will end with a gathering at the following Front Beach business:

• June 25 - Coconut Joe's• July 2 - The Windjammer• July 9 - The Dinghy

Banana Cabana and Acme Lowcountry Kitchen also plan to host later in the summer.
