Mt. Pleasant, S.C. (WCIV) — Neighbors in the Planter’s Point neighborhood off Highway 41 in Mt. Pleasant got a 7-foot wake-up call Monday when a large alligator was spotted roaming the streets.
Shari Sebuck, the amenities director for the neighborhood, said calls started flooding in from neighbors around 6:30 a.m.
The Department of Natural Resources was called to trap the alligator, which was approximately seven feet long.
The trappers had cornered the gator into a nearby yard when it partially climbed a fence in an attempt to get away. That’s when Sebuck snapped a photo.
“I didn’t know alligators could scale fences!” Sebuck said.
She said police officers blocked off the streets and sidewalks for safety while trappers contained the alligator. She said it was removed around 10 a.m.
There have been dozens of sightings of alligators in strange places throughout the Lowcountry this spring. Wildlife experts say the animals are on the move as part of their mating season.
Sebuck said it’s the fifth alligator that has been removed from the neighborhood, which is home to several ponds.
“It’s been a very interesting year here,” she said.
